Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) is set to make waves in Fall 2026 with a pioneering course centered on Diljit Dosanjh, the renowned Punjabi superstar. This initiative, launched through The Creative School, marks a significant first in Canada, focusing specifically on a Punjabi artist.
The announcement occurred at the Billboard Summit at NXNE in Toronto, a gathering that highlighted significant voices from the music and media sectors. This course aims to explore the cultural and musical significance of Dosanjh’s work and his rising influence globally.
Dr. Charlie Wall-Andrews, Assistant Professor at The Creative School, expressed excitement about this groundbreaking project. “Diljit Dosanjh’s journey reflects the blend of culture and music entrepreneurship,” he said. “His success showcases the economic impact of Punjabi music worldwide. Through this course, students will uncover how regional sounds influence global pop culture and support vibrant creative economies.”
Over the last twenty years, Dosanjh has transitioned from a local star in Punjab to an international household name. He boasts over 14 studio albums and 50 singles, achieving remarkable milestones along the way. In 2023, he became the first Punjabi artist to perform at Coachella and made history as the first turban-wearing performer at the Met Gala.
His albums, such as MoonChild Era and G.O.A.T., have achieved international success, with MoonChild Era reaching No. 32 on the Canadian Albums chart, a significant achievement for Indian artists.
Sonali Singh, CEO of Ripple Effects, remarked on the course’s significance. “Diljit represents much more than fame; he symbolizes cultural pride and global representation for Punjabi communities. It’s time his influence was formally recognized in academia,” she said. “His impact is transforming the music industry one achievement at a time.”
Outside of music, Dosanjh has also made his mark in film. He starred in popular Punjabi movies like Jatt & Juliet and Punjab 1984, as well as Bollywood films like Udta Punjab, earning a Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. His upcoming Netflix film, Chamkila, directed by Imtiaz Ali, continues to boost his acclaim.
Last year, Dosanjh made history in North America with his Dil-Luminati tour, setting records for the biggest Punjabi concerts outside of India. Furthermore, Billboard Canada dedicated a special print edition to him, highlighting his groundbreaking work in the music industry.
Mo Ghoneim, President of Billboard UK and Canada, emphasized the importance of the course. “We are excited to support this initiative at TMU,” he said. “Diljit Dosanjh’s music connects cultures and generations, representing the essence of a global movement in music.” His story is now transitioning from the stage to the classroom, where it can inspire future generations.
