New Partnership Boosts STEM Opportunities for Pee Dee Students
HARTSVILLE, SC — The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) has teamed up with Coker University to enhance STEM education in the Pee Dee region. This collaboration aims to create more pathways to higher education for local students.
One key feature of this partnership is the introduction of a $1,000 tuition scholarship for each high school category winner at the SC Sand Hills Region IV Science and Engineering Fair. This award, called the Coker University Scientific Achievement Award, can be applied toward tuition at Coker University.
The Science and Engineering Fair is an exciting event affiliated with the International Science and Engineering Fair and is set to take place on March 13, 2025, at the GSSM campus. It welcomes students in grades 5–12 from several counties, including Chesterfield, Darlington, and Florence.
Dr. Neval Erturk, GSSM’s executive director for research and innovation, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership. “We are committed to expanding STEM access and excellence in our region,” he said. “Coker University’s involvement acknowledges student achievements and helps pave the way for their future.”
In 2024, the fair attracted 50 middle schoolers and 13 high school students. With the new scholarship, organizers hope to see even more high school participation. Dr. Susan Henderson, provost at Coker University, noted that this partnership strengthens the connection between regional schools and college success.
Beyond scholarships, the fair gives students a chance to showcase original research, connect with STEM professionals, and advance to higher levels of competition through the ISEF network. According to the National Math and Science Initiative, increased participation in STEM activities significantly boosts students’ interest in science careers and enhances critical thinking skills.
As local schools continue to promote STEM education, initiatives like these play a vital role in nurturing the next generation of innovators.
