On Saturday, we shared that Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson was still in the first phase of looking at possible head-coaching jobs. After the Lions lost to the Commanders that night, everything might have changed.
A source familiar with the situation mentioned that there are “a lot of moving parts” for Johnson right now. It’s unclear if this disappointing end to the season makes it more or less likely for him to stay with the Lions.
People are also talking about the Raiders interviewing Commanders assistant G.M. Lance Newmark for their general manager position. Newmark has worked with Johnson in Detroit, and some think Johnson would prefer him in a G.M. role to create a strong partnership with the front office.
However, the source noted that this development isn’t hugely significant at the moment.
Now that the Lions are out of the playoffs, Johnson can start having face-to-face interviews. Teams like the Bears, Jaguars, Raiders, and Patriots already spoke with him virtually during Wild Card week. Other teams, including the Cowboys and Saints, might also express interest soon. So far, the Jets have not shown any interest in Johnson.
Staying in Detroit was a possible option for Johnson while the team was still in the running. With their playoff dreams now over, he might see the next season as a chance to finish what he started.
