Oregon State University (OSU) has been a force for change for over 150 years. Recently, it received the Innovation and Economic Prosperity designation from APLU in 2025. This honor showcases OSU’s ongoing commitment to collaboration and economic development, particularly within the state of Oregon.
One of the university’s notable initiatives is the Frontiers of Advanced Semiconductor Technology (FAST). This program aims to boost workforce training, create high-wage jobs, and utilize artificial intelligence for advancing semiconductor technology in Oregon. Alongside it, the Corvallis Microfluidics Tech Hub, which involves over 60 partners like HP and Intel, aims to revolutionize microfluidics used in various technologies, including biotech. Furthermore, the Pacific Northwest Mass Timber Tech Hub is working to establish the region as a leader in sustainable building practices, promising both job creation and reduced environmental impact.
OSU is also committed to enhancing its facilities. The Jen-Hsun Huang and Lori Mills Huang Collaborative Innovation Complex, set to open in late 2026, will house a powerful NVIDIA supercomputer and foster research in artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, OSU-Cascades in Bend is developing an Innovation District to encourage collaboration between students and local companies.
In 2025, OSU reported $417 million in research spending, contributing $3.5 billion annually to Oregon’s economy. The university’s strategic plan, titled “Prosperity Widely Shared,” is focused on ensuring economic growth benefits everyone. It emphasizes big discoveries leading to substantial solutions, aiming for worldwide impact.
Innovative research at OSU includes significant breakthroughs: a copper-based material that could double carbon dioxide capture, safer aqueous batteries for energy storage, and a novel drug delivery system targeting the brain for diseases like Alzheimer’s. These projects reflect OSU’s strength in areas like climate science, biotechnology, and AI.
Recognizing the importance of faculty research, OSU is leading the PTIE initiative, which encourages collaboration with industries and promotes innovation as part of faculty career advancement. This approach aligns with broader efforts to foster economic engagement and problem-solving partnerships across various sectors.
To strengthen industry ties, OSU launched the Office of Economic Development and Industry Relations in 2024. This office serves as a single point of contact for research, expertise, and facilities, making it easier for businesses to connect with the university.
OSU’s recent IEP Designation reflects its deep engagement with communities, industry, and government. It emphasizes the university’s long-term commitment to fostering innovation and developing talent within Oregon. OSU aims to be the state’s go-to partner, working towards inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
