Unlocking Success: Top Priorities for Every AFC Team in NFL Free Agency

Kansas City needs to improve its offensive tackle positions after falling short in the Super Bowl. In 2024, the Chiefs faced challenges at left tackle, with four players logging over 75 snaps due to inconsistent performances. Joe Thuney, who was the starting left guard but moved outside later in the season, had mixed results. Overall, the Chiefs’ left tackles recorded the fifth-highest pressure rate at 12.4%. On the right side, Jawaan Taylor’s pressure rate was 8.3%, which raised eyebrows considering the large contract he received in the 2023 offseason. However, Kansas City did secure Trey Smith, which strengthens its interior line and makes it one of the best in the league.

The Chiefs also need to bolster their receiving corps. Four of their top eight receivers are headed to free agency. Travis Kelce will be back for his 13th season, and with players like Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy on the roster, they may not spend heavily on new receivers. Still, Kelce seems to be slowing down. His receiving efficiency dropped to +14.2 EPA in 2024, the lowest since 2016, compared to +41.9 in 2023.

Defensively, the Chiefs had a solid season, with most key players returning. Linebacker Nick Bolton led the team with 106 tackles, while safety Justin Reid followed closely with 85 tackles. Both players are free agents now, and re-signing Bolton might be a challenge due to potential contract demands. On the defensive line, free-agent tackle Tershawn Wharton was crucial alongside Chris Jones, tallying 35 pressures, the third-most on the team. Keeping or finding a replacement for Wharton is essential for the defensive front’s success. Additionally, Kansas City could use an upgrade at cornerback opposite Trent McDuffie.

With several decisions to make and limited cap space, the Chiefs may seek budget-friendly options or focus on bringing in younger talent to remain competitive.
