Northumberland County Council has introduced a new £50,000 Environment and Climate Fund to support local projects that tackle emissions, enhance energy efficiency, and encourage recycling. Groups can apply for grants of up to £5,000. The deadline for applications is February 27.
Councillor John Riddle, who oversees environment and rural affairs, expressed his enthusiasm for the funding. He noted that these grants allow communities to take meaningful steps toward sustainability, benefiting both local residents and the environment.
Eligible organizations include community groups, charities, and local councils. The fund aligns with the Council’s aim to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040, as outlined in its Environmental Policy Statement and Action Plan. Riddle emphasized that every project, big or small, contributes to positive change, whether through better energy use or sustainable transport initiatives.
Past recipients include Holy Island Village Hall, which improved its lighting and energy monitoring, and Queens Hall in Hexham, which received funding for Carbon Literacy training. Other projects funded include solar installations and water quality monitoring initiatives.
The Council will host two online drop-in sessions to answer questions about the funding: February 11 from 12 PM to 1 PM and February 18 from 6 PM to 7 PM.
