These models are designed to run on regular laptops and even smartphones. Plus, they’re open-source and can work offline, making it easier for scientists and everyday people to analyze and protect our planet.

These compact models are particularly valuable in places with limited internet or electricity, such as disaster-hit areas, remote locations, or even outer space. TerraMind, created by a European space team, shines in Earth monitoring tasks. Prithvi-EO 2.0, developed alongside NASA, aids in tracking long-term environmental changes and has even won accolades. Earlier versions of these models were too large and needed powerful hardware, making them less accessible.

IBM tackled this challenge with a method called a “frozen encoder,” which reduces the size of the models while maintaining accuracy. This makes them up to 120 times smaller, perfect for mobile devices. With this innovation, these AI models can be integrated into satellites, drones, and phones. For instance, future satellites could receive updates while in orbit. And since these models are free, anyone with a basic laptop can train or customize them.

Recent reports indicate that the adoption of such accessible technologies is growing. A survey showed that nearly 65% of researchers in remote areas could use these models to monitor environmental changes effectively. Another interesting fact is that the global AI in environmental monitoring market is expected to reach $12 billion by 2028, highlighting the increasing role of AI in tackling ecological concerns.

As for IBM’s stock, analysts currently rate it with a Moderate Buy consensus. The analysis is based on six Buys, six Holds, and one Sell, according to recent financial assessments. The average price target for IBM is $287.25 per share, suggesting the stock is trading close to its fair value. With these advancements and market perceptions, IBM seems poised for a significant impact in both technology and environmental sustainability.
