Most handheld PCs struggle to deliver 1080p at 60fps for modern games. Typically, they run between 720p and 800p and upscale to 1080p to get that 60fps. Take the Steam Deck, for example. It can handle older games like Fallout 3 at maximum settings and 60fps. But for titles from the PS3 era and newer, settings often need adjustment for smooth gameplay. As for PS4 and PS5 games, you’re usually looking at low settings with resolutions still around 720p to 800p to hit 30-60fps.
Interestingly, most developers aren’t focused on a 40fps option, even though it could be ideal for many games. Why? Because only a few systems support this natively. Most players are still using TVs from 2015 to 2019, which often lack 120hz features. It’s fair to assume many gamers are stuck with technology that doesn’t support higher refresh rates.
Now, regarding performance in games like Arise, while native 1080 looks great, I find 30fps acceptable for casual gaming. A performance mode could have helped, dropping the resolution to 720p or 800p and using upscaling to reach 1080p. This might not hit 60fps, but even hitting 40fps would be a nice upgrade. On smaller screens, the difference between 720p upscaled and native 1080p isn’t drastic.
As @PikaPhantom pointed out, achieving 40fps on devices like the Series S2 with Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) looks fantastic. The same goes for 45fps on the Steam Deck OLED, which has a native refresh rate of 90hz. Developers should definitely consider adding 40fps modes as a balanced option. These modes might lower settings like foliage and shadows while keeping a resolution in that 720p to 800p range. It results in crisp images and smooth animations, even if there’s a bit less detail in the scenes.
With gaming technology constantly evolving, a focus on smoother frame rates rather than just higher resolutions could enhance the gaming experience, especially for those on handheld devices. After all, players want an enjoyable and fluid gaming experience, regardless of the screen size.
