Executive Summary
Background
Climate change poses a serious threat to the Asia-Pacific region. People here are six times more likely to face climate-related disasters compared to those in other parts of the world. These disasters cause significant economic harm, with annual losses hitting $924 billion—around 2.9% of the region’s GDP. Alongside these challenges, the Asia-Pacific faces a severe nutrition crisis, marked by high rates of undernutrition and a worrying rise in obesity and related diseases. In fact, this region is home to over half of the world’s stunted children and a significant number of those who are overweight.
Purpose and Methods
This report aims to explore how climate change affects various types of malnutrition in the Asia-Pacific area, focusing on vulnerable groups. The goal is to enhance the World Food Programme’s climate response by including nutrition-focused strategies in high-risk countries. To achieve this, we reviewed existing literature, conducted ten interviews with key informants, and created data maps.
