Researchers at AIG Hospitals have made an important discovery about obesity among people of Indian ancestry. They found that genetics and lifestyle factors play a significant role in determining obesity risk.
This study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, involved collaboration with experts from the University of Luxembourg and the University of Marburg in Germany. They looked at data from participants of Indian descent in the UK Biobank and another group from India that was profiled at AIG Hospitals.
The results showed a clear link between genetic risk factors and lifestyle choices. For example, those with a higher genetic predisposition to obesity were more affected by their lifestyle habits. Interestingly, younger individuals with greater genetic risk appeared to be more influenced by their lifestyle choices.
Dr. D Nageshwar Reddy, Chairman of AIG Hospitals, highlighted a crucial point. He noted that obesity is often caused by multiple genetic factors rather than a single one, meaning many genes contribute to the risk. Yet, we have much to learn about how these genetic factors interact with lifestyle, especially in Indian populations where there’s evidence of a unique metabolic response to weight gain.
This research is vital not just for understanding obesity but also for developing effective prevention strategies tailored to specific communities. As awareness of obesity’s complexities grows, it’s clear that both genetics and lifestyle need to be considered in tackling this health issue.
It’s also noteworthy that recent statistics indicate obesity rates globally have skyrocketed in the past decades, emphasizing the importance of studies like this one. According to the World Health Organization, the global prevalence of obesity nearly tripled between 1975 and 2016.
