NASA’s latest space telescope, SPHEREx, has just launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. This mission is set to create an extraordinary map of the entire sky using infrared light.

SPHEREx, which stands for Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer, will take two years to build a three-dimensional map of the cosmos. It will scan the entire sky four times in over 100 different wavelengths.

“SPHEREx is going to produce a massive 3D map of the night sky,” said Phil Korngut, an astrophysicist from the California Institute of Technology. “With this unique data, we’re going to tackle some of the biggest questions in astrophysics.”

Unlike the James Webb Space Telescope, which looks at specific spots in deep space, SPHEREx observes everything at once. This means it can spot faint cosmic signals that could reveal the universe’s history.

A main goal of SPHEREx is to explore cosmic inflation. This theory suggests that right after the Big Bang, the universe expanded faster than light. By mapping hundreds of millions of galaxies, SPHEREx aims to uncover subtle imprints left from this rapid expansion. Researchers hope to understand how cosmic structures formed through dark matter and gravity.

SPHEREx didn’t fly solo. It launched alongside another mission called PUNCH, or Polarimeter to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere. PUNCH will investigate the sun’s outer atmosphere, the solar corona, and solar wind, important for understanding space weather that can affect our satellites.

This partnership helped save NASA around $15 million in launch costs, showing a new way to balance budgets while maximizing scientific potential.

Overall, SPHEREx will create a comprehensive catalog of infrared sources across the universe. This data will not only support future missions but will also allow scientists to compare its findings with detailed images from more advanced telescopes.

With its capability to see beyond the visible spectrum, SPHEREx might finally answer cosmic riddles that have puzzled astronomers for years. As it scans the sky, it’s expected to fuel new discoveries in cosmology, the study of exoplanets, and how galaxies evolve, reshaping our understanding of the universe moving forward.
