Unlocking the Future: Essential Next Steps for Offshore Wind Development in Western Australia

Exciting news for the offshore wind industry in Australia! The government has moved forward by granting preliminary feasibility licenses in Western Australia. This step is set to create jobs, attract investments, and support local growth.

In June 2025, two projects were shortlisted for the wind area off Bunbury’s coast. There was some overlap between the projects, but the government has since resolved that issue. The two companies receiving licenses are:

  • Westward Wind Pty Ltd for the Westward Wind Project
  • Bunbury Offshore Wind Pty Ltd for the Bunbury Offshore Wind Project (Southern Area)

Additionally, Bunbury Offshore Wind Pty Ltd has also been considered for another project in the northern area. Together, these three projects will create:

  • An area covering about 730 km2
  • A capacity to generate 4 Gigawatts of power

However, the government has yet to formally issue any feasibility licenses. The final decision rests with the Minister for Climate Change and Energy, who will consult with First Nations groups as required by the Native Title Act 1993.

According to recent reports, the global offshore wind market is rapidly growing, with investments projected to reach over $200 billion by 2030. This growth is driven by increased demand for renewable energy and advancements in technology.

Experts believe that regions like Western Australia have immense potential. In a recent interview, a renewable energy analyst noted, “Investing in offshore wind can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help transition Australia to a more sustainable energy future.” As this industry expands, it might also inspire similar projects across the globe, highlighting the importance of collaboration among nations to tackle climate change.

As local communities and businesses watch these developments unfold, the buzz on social media reflects excitement and hope for job creation and a cleaner environment. Many users are sharing their thoughts on platforms like Twitter, using hashtags like #OffshoreWind and #SustainableFuture to highlight this positive change.

As Australia takes these important steps, the momentum for offshore wind energy is building, making it an exciting time for renewable energy enthusiasts.
