LYNN — Peter “PJ” Holey Jr. is igniting a passion for technology as a computer science teacher at Lynn English High School. He believes in starting from the basics. “We use our hands for just about everything,” he says. This hands-on approach helps students dive deep into the world of technology.
Recently, he took time to work with students in the Project YES program at Marshall Middle School, focusing on their emotional and educational needs. By engaging students in detail, Holey guides them toward success.
As part of the instructional technology faculty, Holey runs a program in partnership with Cisco Systems, where students explore computer technology from the ground up. They learn to build Ethernet cables before moving on to more complex topics like computer networks. One of the most popular subjects he teaches is cybersecurity, which resonates with students as it relates to their everyday lives.
“Kids today are growing up in a tech-centered world,” Holey says. “They connect with topics that matter to them, yet many don’t know how things really work.” He finds that once students see the relevance of what they are learning, they find excitement in it.
Lynn English offers a variety of courses, including media technology, basic computer science, and programming languages. Some students are gearing up for careers, while others aim for higher education at institutions like Wentworth Institute of Technology or computer science programs at Salem State University. Even those interested in fields like auto mechanics can benefit from understanding computer systems in modern cars.
Holey has been teaching at Lynn English since 2011. He comes from a sporty family; his father, Peter Holey Sr., was known for his football skills at Boston College. PJ himself has a background in football, having played and coached at Lynn English. But now, his focus is on preparing students for a tech-driven future.
“We aim to create a technical pathway for our students to keep up with other districts,” Holey explains. He hopes that Lynn Public Schools will continue to be a leader in computer science education.
