To strengthen the Xbox platform, Sharma is reshaping her team, bringing in familiar faces from her days at Microsoft’s CoreAI division. Jared Palmer is joining as VP of engineering. He’ll work closely with Sharma to tackle complex engineering challenges. “Our goal is to solve player problems using advanced tech,” Sharma shared in a recent memo.
Tim Allen, who previously held high-ranking design roles at Microsoft and GitHub, is taking the design reins at Xbox. This marks a significant shift as it merges product design, creative elements, and research with a focus on what fans want.
Jonathan McKay will take charge of growth and analytics. He previously led growth efforts at CoreAI. Meanwhile, Evan Chaki will focus on streamlining development processes to reduce repetitive tasks.
Although these hires emphasize technical skill, they also raise eyebrows among some fans regarding an AI push. However, Sharma clarified that the goal is much more about enhancing the Xbox experience through real-time graphics and user-friendly interfaces.
These changes come after former Xbox president Sarah Bond stepped down. While there was speculation about her possibly leading Xbox, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella decided to take a different approach by appointing Sharma from outside the usual circle.
Among other high-profile changes, Roanne Sones, vice president of devices and ecosystems, is taking a break but will remain available as an advisor. Kevin Gammill, who contributed nearly two decades to Xbox, is also leaving the company.
Jason Ronald, known for leading next-gen projects, is stepping up with a promotion, although his exact new role hasn’t been defined yet. Jason Beaumont will serve as interim head of engineering during this transition.
