In a recent chat with Kinda Funny Games, Bethesda’s creative director Todd Howard shared exciting news about The Elder Scrolls 6. He revealed that the game will return to the classic format fans love and will be built on an upgraded version of Bethesda’s Creation Engine.
During the February 18 live interview, Howard noted that both Starfield and Fallout 76 represented a shift from the traditional open-world RPG style that players expect from Bethesda. He explained, “In many ways, Fallout 76 and Starfield are a little bit of a creative detour.” They aim to recapture that classic feel with Elder Scrolls 6.
Howard emphasized the importance of returning to what they do best. “We have a style of game we really like, and there’s still a lot of innovation to explore,” he said. He believes that when players step into the game, they should feel like they’re experiencing something fresh and new.
Moreover, Howard mentioned the studio’s efforts to enhance their engine, crucial for improving gameplay and graphics. They have been upgrading to Creation Engine 3, which will power Elder Scrolls 6 and future titles.
As for a release date, Howard said they are approaching a significant milestone in development. However, he warned that it may still be “a while yet” before the game is ready.
According to a 2022 survey by Game Informer, 70% of gamers expressed excitement about returning to traditional fantasy RPGs, highlighting the strong appetite for this genre among fans. With many players yearning for character-driven stories and expansive worlds, Elder Scrolls 6 could meet this demand.
In the ever-evolving landscape of gaming, returning to roots can spark nostalgia while attracting new players. As Howard put it, they want to create an experience that resonates deeply with both longtime fans and newcomers alike. You can watch the full interview here.
This revitalization of classic gaming elements places Bethesda in an exciting position, navigating both innovation and tradition as they work towards a highly anticipated release.
