Unlocking the Future: Morgan State University Partners with Amazon Machine Learning University to Revolutionize AI Education

BALTIMORE — Morgan State University is taking an exciting step toward improving education by teaming up with the Amazon Machine Learning University (MLU) Educators Consortium and Amazon-MLU Transformation Alliance. This collaboration focuses on bringing artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) into its curriculum and research efforts.

The goal is to create new learning paths for students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). This is important because careers in AI and ML are rapidly growing and in high demand. Faculty members at Morgan will be involved in training sessions, workshops, and discussions each month to sharpen their knowledge and teaching skills in these areas.

“This partnership helps us stay innovative in education and move forward with our AI goals,” says Hongtao Yu, Ph.D., the university’s provost. “By integrating AI into our classrooms, we’re equipping students and teachers with vital skills needed in today’s fast-paced world.”

The Amazon MLU Transformation Alliance connects educators with Amazon’s leadership, enabling hands-on learning experiences in AI and ML. For the upcoming academic year, ten faculty members from different schools at Morgan will participate in this initiative. They will receive training that includes boot camps and ongoing professional development in AI technologies.

The program kicked off with a symposium in February 2025 to introduce the resources available to faculty. Participating educators will have access to open-source materials, making it easier to add new AI-focused courses to existing programs. Over the course of the inaugural year, the initiative will support 200 faculty members and 25 administrators, impacting over 250,000 students.

Daryl Hammett, an HBCU alumnus and director at Amazon Web Services (AWS), emphasizes the importance of this collaboration, stating, “This initiative highlights how inclusion drives innovation in AI and machine learning. By bringing together educators and industry leaders, we can exchange ideas that lead to exciting advancements.”

Currently, Amazon is collaborating with 29 HBCUs to improve access to AI and ML education and nurture a more diverse tech talent pool. This approach not only helps students but also addresses a significant need in the tech industry for skilled professionals.

As technology continues to evolve, initiatives like this are crucial. According to recent reports, job postings in AI and ML have increased by over 25% in the past year. This trend showcases the demand for education that prepares students for future roles in these fields. By investing in AI education, institutions like Morgan State University are positioning their graduates for success.

In summary, the partnership between Morgan State University and Amazon is not just about technology. It represents a commitment to education, inclusion, and preparing students for promising careers in a rapidly changing world.
