New Delhi has recently taken a significant step to strengthen its defense manufacturing sector. The Cabinet Committee on Security has approved the procurement of the Advanced Towed Artillery Gun System (ATAGS) for approximately Rs 7,000 crore. The journey of ATAGS began in 2013 with the aim to replace older artillery systems in the Indian Army. The gun revealed its capabilities during public appearances at the Republic Day parade in 2017 and later during the Independence Day salute in 2022.
However, the path hasn’t been smooth. A significant setback occurred in September 2020 when a barrel burst during trials, injuring personnel. This led to a re-evaluation of the gun’s design and redeployment for additional trials in challenging conditions, including Sikkim and Pokhran. By 2023, the gun was ready for production, and in 2024, Armenia placed an order for ATAGS. Finally, in 2025, the CCS approved an order for 307 units for the Indian Army.
Developed by Bharat Forge, TASL, and the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO), ATAGS features an innovative all-electric drive, ensuring reliable and maintenance-free operation. It has a range exceeding 45 kilometers and the capability to launch future Long Range Guided Munitions (LRGM).
The Importance of Artillery in Modern Warfare
Artillery plays a crucial role in modern military operations. It provides critical fire support, strengthening ground operations and adapting to diverse battlefield conditions. Effective artillery can engage targets beyond infantry weapon range, aiding in softening enemy defenses and facilitating ground assaults. During the 1999 Kargil War, for instance, the 155 mm Bofors howitzers were instrumental in delivering vital fire support.
Today, the Indian Army is dedicated to upgrading its artillery systems, moving towards a more self-reliant and advanced force. The transition includes not just ATAGS but also other modern systems like the Dhanush and K-9 Vajra howitzers. In December 2024, India ordered an additional 100 K9 Vajra-T units, further enhancing its artillery capabilities.
Recent surveys show a growing confidence among military experts and the public in India’s national security posture. A survey by the Centre for Land Warfare Studies in July 2023 reported that over 70% of respondents believe in the effectiveness of indigenous defense capabilities in improving national security.
