Peter Safran, co-chief of DC Studios, recently celebrated the premiere of James Gunn’s “Superman” amidst a mix of nostalgia and hope. The event took place at the TCL Chinese IMAX theater, marking a fresh start for the DC film franchise, which, despite raking in $16.8 billion over 58 films, has struggled against Marvel’s dominance lately.

So, did Gunn’s vision succeed? Initial box office numbers suggest a cautious optimism. The film debuted to $220 million worldwide. This result prompted excitement from David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, who called it a promising lift-off for a new direction in the DC universe. However, it’s crucial to note that while domestic earnings were strong, the international response, with $95 million, was underwhelming. Box office analyst Jeff Bock points out that a stronger international showing was vital for this film to truly reset the franchise.

Yet, Wall Street reacted positively. The Warner Bros. Discovery stock rose, with analysts viewing the domestic performance as a rewarding sign for the franchise’s future. One top agent noted that Zaslav’s comments reflect a long-awaited triumph after facing significant scrutiny in the past.

Gunn, who both directed and wrote the film, earned a staggering $15 million compared to much lower salaries for the lead actors. The film itself had a hefty budget, costing $225 million to produce and an additional $125 million for marketing, which included high-profile stunts.

In a comparison with Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel,” which opened to $200 million in today’s dollars, “Superman” needs strong audience support going forward to be seen as a true success, particularly amid mixed critical reception. The film received an A- CinemaScore, indicating fans are responding positively.

Interestingly, the film notably avoided political controversies until close to its release. However, it has sparked conversations online, particularly among pro-Palestinian activists who interpret its plot as a critique of Israel amid escalating tensions. This perception may boost ongoing interest in the film.

As the box office unfolds, it remains to be seen if “Superman” can maintain audience attention and thrive in the coming weeks, especially with mixed international reviews and its complex themes resonating with various social narratives.
