Tecnológico de Monterrey has teamed up with Microsoft to launch the TECgpt initiative, announced at the IFE Conference focused on education innovation. This program aims to support universities around the world in adopting artificial intelligence (AI).
Another exciting development is the formation of the AI Global Education Network (AIGEN). This network will help universities share best practices for using AI tools. It will create a supportive community for institutions looking to bring AI into their educational settings. Michael Fung, the Executive Director of the Institute for the Future of Education at Tecnológico de Monterrey, emphasizes that AIGEN is about collaboration, not standard setting. Members will work together to advance AI usage in higher education.
AIGEN has three main goals:
- Software: Explore both commercial and open-source AI tools suitable for education.
- Teaching and Learning: Develop guidelines for ethical AI use, provide training, and design curricula that prepare students for future careers.
- Research: Collect data on AI usage, assess its impact, and create learning resources.
To kick things off, a pilot program with 10 universities will test the TECgpt platform. Each university will involve 30 faculty members over a period of 3 to 4 months, documenting their experiences. The results will be shared at the next IFE Conference in 2026.
So far, universities like the National Autonomous University of Mexico and the University of Guadalajara have joined this initiative. During the IFE Conference, a workshop will officially launch this pilot group and promote further participation.
The TECgpt platform was launched in September 2023, marking a significant step for Tecnológico de Monterrey as the first institution in Latin America to create its own AI ecosystem. Since then, over 14,000 users have engaged with it, and its virtual assistant, TECbot, has interacted with more than 81,000 users.
Carles Abarca, the Vice President of Digital Transformation at Tecnológico de Monterrey, shared that their early access to Microsoft Azure’s AI services has allowed them to pioneer this effort in Latin America. “Our goal is to extend the benefits of TECgpt to universities everywhere,” he stated.
This initiative highlights the increasing role of AI in education, aiming to prepare institutions and students for a rapidly evolving future.
