The Center on Rural Innovation partnered with the Selma and Dallas County Chamber of Commerce to bring local leaders together. Their aim was to discuss building a technology pipeline for students in the area.

Cameryn Mitchell from the center explained that the Selma Community Roundtable, held at the Selma-Dallas County Public Library, was an opportunity to explore how to attract tech jobs. They also discussed the challenges students face in pursuing these jobs.

“We wanted to hear from the community about the technology job opportunities they hope to see in Selma,” Mitchell mentioned.

The roundtable included various community stakeholders, such as Dallas County School Superintendent Anthony Sampson and Selma City Schools Career-Tech director Miranda Bissoo. They talked about gaps in local technology resources and the obstacles young people encounter when seeking employment.

Additionally, conversations included how local businesses and leaders could better showcase the positive aspects of the community.

The insights gathered during this discussion will help generate a report for the city. This report will outline a strategy to create and attract technology jobs, aiming to retain young talent in Selma and Dallas County.

“Today’s discussion was very productive,” Mitchell concluded.
