This week, New Mexico was highlighted again for its poor education performance. Sadly, we ranked as the worst in the country. This is something we need to change. Our kids deserve better. It feels like we either don’t know how to educate effectively, we’re struggling with the testing process, or we’ve simply given up. I’m frustrated with this trend. While some areas have good schools, we need to ensure the entire state improves its education system. In District 34, we’re fortunate to have functional schools, but we shouldn’t shy away from exploring new ideas, including private schools, which also show strong results.
I believe private schools play a crucial role in our education landscape. They often provide smaller class sizes and access to modern technology. Many teachers prefer the structured environment found in private schools, which can lead to better learning experiences. Plus, parents who choose private schooling tend to be more involved in their children’s education. This helps ease the burden on public schools and can lead to improved outcomes overall.
I support parental choice in education. Our tax dollars for education should follow the child, ensuring no student is stuck in a failing school. Every parent should feel empowered to choose the best educational environment for their child.
There’s also an issue in the environmental sector worth discussing. Recently, a midstream operator bought another company’s assets and found an environmental problem. They reported it themselves and spent over $100 million to fix the issue. Yet, the State Environmental Department fined them around $45 million. This doesn’t make sense. If a company is trying to do the right thing by reporting issues, the state should encourage that behavior, not penalize it.
I’ve received feedback on my bill, SB 185, which deals with the illegal diversion of water. I plan to amend it, but my main goal is to stop illegal water diversion for profit. Water is a precious resource in New Mexico, and I believe the State Engineer needs to do more to protect it.
Today, I had the pleasure of meeting some 4-H kids at the Legislature. It’s always a joy to support these young people. Senator Ezzell and I were thrilled to welcome them. As former 4-H participants ourselves, we are strong advocates for this program.
