If you’ve ever checked into a hotel, you may have seen a telephone in the bathroom. At first glance, it seems unnecessary. Yet, these phones have been a standard feature in many hotels for decades, and there are good reasons for it—beyond just a touch of luxury.

This practice began in the mid-20th century. DK Ghatani, a travel consultant, explains that luxury hotels wanted to impress guests with amenities that showed their commitment to comfort and convenience. Over time, though, the reasons shifted from merely being a status symbol to practical safety measures.
Bathrooms can be slippery places. Having a phone nearby can be a lifesaver in emergencies. If someone slips and falls, they can quickly call for help. Before everyone had mobile phones, business travelers found these phones helpful for staying connected even when they were busy getting ready.
But what about today? With everyone carrying mobile phones, do bathroom telephones still matter? Surprisingly, yes, they do. Many guests don’t take their phones into the bathroom. In emergencies, a direct line to the front desk can be crucial. Ghatani points out that these phones also cater to guests with disabilities or mobility issues, who may feel safer knowing they can easily reach for help in a tough situation.
Hotels are constantly balancing modern technology with traditional safety features. Many have integrated smart systems, letting guests use voice commands to contact staff. Some even install panic buttons in bathrooms, providing an even more discreet way to get help.
Yet, not everyone is comfortable relying solely on technology. Traditional bathroom telephones still serve as a reliable backup in case of a power failure or if guests don’t have their mobile phones available. The aim is to create an environment that blends convenience, security, and a welcoming atmosphere for all.
Interestingly, a recent survey showed that nearly 65% of hotel guests value safety features like bathroom phones, indicating that these old-school amenities still resonate with today’s travelers. As hotels evolve, maintaining a mix of modern and classic touches can enhance the guest experience significantly.
