Try this: close one eye and focus straight ahead. You might notice a soft blur in your peripheral vision—your nose! It’s right there, but most of the time, we don’t even realize it’s there. So, why can’t we see our noses, even though they’re front and center?
Michael Webster, a vision scientist from the University of Nevada, Reno, explains that we actually can see our noses; we just choose not to pay attention to them. “Vision is a prediction of what you think the world looks like,” he says. Our brains prioritize important cues to help us navigate and survive. This means they filter out things we already know, like our noses.
This makes sense, especially when you think about survival. If our brains focused on everything in our field of vision, it would be overwhelming. Imagine trying to notice every detail around you—all the while needing to be alert for any threats or changes in your environment.
Our brains even disregard parts of our eyes, like blood vessels. These vessels do collect light, but they also create a bit of visual clutter. Webster compares it to peering through branches when looking at the world: “It’s like you’re sitting up in a tree, seeing everything through dead branches.” Normally, our brains filter this junk out. But during an eye exam, for instance, you might catch a glimpse of those vessels as dark squiggles when the doctor shines a light in your eyes.
Interestingly, we also have blind spots—areas where our vision doesn’t register at all because that’s where the optic nerve exits the eye. This blind spot is around five degrees wide, and yet we rarely notice it. Our brains cleverly fill in the gaps. If you’re looking at a white wall, for example, you might “see” a white area in the blind spot simply because that makes sense in context.
If you’re focusing on your nose now, you might feel more aware of it than usual. Webster highlights that if you’re intentionally trying to see something, then it comes into focus. This phenomenon illustrates how our perception of reality isn’t merely a recording; it’s more like a customized painting made by our brains to help us navigate through life.
Webster argues that this model of perception may not even reflect reality itself. “What you see is just the information you need to get by,” he suggests. So, in a way, our vision is guided by utility rather than an accurate portrayal of the world around us.

For instance, a study found that individuals might process visual information differently based on their emotions or past experiences, altering their perception of surroundings in ways that can impact decision-making.
