Coffee isn’t just a drink for many; it’s a daily ritual and a source of comfort. From that first sip in the morning to an afternoon boost, coffee can feel like an essential part of life. But did you know that drinking coffee at the wrong times can disrupt hormone balance and even affect your health? Luckily, you don’t have to give it up; it’s all about timing.
Integrative lifestyle expert Luke Coutinho shares some helpful tips on when to enjoy your cup of joe. He recently posted on Instagram about the significance of circadian medicine, which studies how our body’s natural rhythms influence health.
“Circadian medicine first before caffeine,” he explains in his post. He emphasizes that drinking coffee after the body is ready can prevent hormonal spikes caused by caffeine at inopportune moments. If you enjoy coffee, do it mindfully!
Coutinho suggests some morning practices before your first coffee: get at least 8 hours of sleep, spend 30 minutes in sunlight, do 10 minutes of stretches, practice some breathing exercises, and hydrate with lemon water. He recommends waiting a full 160 minutes after waking to have your first cup.
Additionally, he previously advised against having black coffee on an empty stomach. He suggests waiting about 90 to 120 minutes after waking up to protect your digestive health. Interesting to note, studies show that caffeine can increase stomach acid production. So, having an empty stomach and coffee may not be the best combination.
These practices can enhance your coffee experience! With the right timing, you can still enjoy your favorite drink while keeping your health in check.
Experts agree that being mindful of how and when we consume caffeine can lead to better overall health. A survey by the National Coffee Association found that more than 60% of Americans consume coffee daily. It’s clear that many people rely on coffee, so understanding its effects is crucial.
So next time you reach for that cup, remember to enjoy it at the right moment. Your body will thank you!
