Joe Luquette, a bioinformatics expert at Harvard Medical School, described some cells as “very messed up.” This study, published on bioRxiv, is part of a $140 million project aimed at mapping genetic mutations across various body sites using samples from 150 donors.

This new data enhances our understanding of a phenomenon called mosaicism, where cells within a single individual show different genetic makeups. Soichi Sano from Japan’s National Cerebral and Cardiovascular Center emphasizes that this research could significantly advance the understanding of how these variations influence health and disease, particularly cancer.

For instance, analyzing RNA—often in higher quantities per cell—is easier than sequencing the limited DNA copies present in individual cells.

According to recent statistics, about 10 to 30% of all cancers might be linked to these kinds of genetic mutations. This highlights the importance of understanding mosaicism and its potential health impacts.
