Mammals may owe their swift reproductive cycles to dinosaurs. João Pedro de Magalhães, a microbiologist from the University of Birmingham, believes that the age of dinosaurs changed how early mammals evolved. Instead of focusing on long lifespans, these mammals had to reproduce quickly to survive in a world full of predators.
Think about it. If you’re being hunted by giant dinosaurs, living a long life might not seem worth it. Rapid reproduction became key for survival. In a recent paper published in BioEssays, de Magalhães introduces the “longevity bottleneck hypothesis.” He argues that the threat posed by dinosaurs forced early mammals to lose genes linked to long life. This loss, he says, still affects us today.
While some mammals, like humans and elephants, can live longer than most animals, they still carry ancient genetic limitations. For most of their history, mammals were small, quick to reproduce, and lived under constant threat from dinosaurs. This evolutionary pressure over millions of years shaped who they are today.
De Magalhães highlights that many mammals lack regenerative traits found in other species. For instance, reptiles can regenerate lost body parts, while mammal teeth don’t keep growing. This could be because early mammals didn’t need such abilities when surviving was a daily challenge.
As he notes, “Some of the earliest mammals were forced to live toward the bottom of the food chain.” This instinct to reproduce rapidly may explain why cancer rates are higher in mammals compared to other species. Experts often cite rapid aging as a factor.
Recent studies show that mammals generally have shorter lifespans compared to reptiles and certain fish. For example, the average lifespan of a mammal is roughly 15 years, while the green sea turtle can live for over a century.

Dinosaurs fueled a unique survival strategy in mammals that continues to influence their health and longevity today.
