Unlocking the Secrets: Health Risks of Today’s Lifestyle Habits Revealed by Experts

In China, medical experts have recently highlighted the health risks of modern living. As part of the country’s national health lifestyle promotion month, they discussed how habits like ordering food online, drinking sugary beverages, lounging around, and compulsive shopping can be harmful.

This conversation took place during a media briefing in Shanghai, organized by the Shanghai Municipal Health Commission and the Shanghai Health Promotion Center. The aim was to raise awareness about these habits and the psychological factors behind them.

Wu Jiang, a nutrition expert at Shanghai Huadong Hospital, warned against sugary drinks. She shared that daily consumers of beverages like milk tea face serious health risks, including obesity and liver issues. “Cutting back on sugar slowly and replacing it with healthier options can help,” Wu advised. She also suggested activities such as walking or listening to music to manage stress, instead of reaching for sugary treats.

On the psychological front, Qiao Ying, a chief physician at the Shanghai Mental Health Center, shed light on compulsive shopping. She explained that buying more items than needed often stems from feelings of insecurity and emotional voids, driven by a consumer culture. “These actions might seem unrelated, but they are reactions to the pressures of modern life, often providing a temporary sense of control,” Qiao said.

In today’s high-speed society, many turn to these habits for relief. However, experts believe that true solutions lie in improving one’s life overall. Qiao emphasized that when individuals gain satisfaction from their work, feel connected in relationships, and find joy in leisure activities, these unhealthy habits are likely to fade.

Interestingly, recent surveys indicate a growing awareness of these issues among the public. A study by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention found that over 60% of respondents recognized the health impacts of excessive sugar and sedentary behavior. This suggests that while people may indulge in these habits, there is also a strong desire to make healthier choices.

In today’s fast-paced world, awareness is key. Addressing these unhealthy habits not only supports individual well-being but can also foster a healthier society.
