By accelerating lead nuclei to nearly the speed of light and colliding them, they created intense electric fields. These fields vibrated the lead nuclei, causing them to emit protons. If three protons were ejected, lead atoms could indeed become gold atoms. Though they can’t see the gold directly, special detectors help them count the protons that were knocked loose, revealing how many gold atoms were produced.

Amazingly, researchers estimate that around 89,000 gold nuclei come into existence every second. But before you start dreaming about striking it rich, know this: these gold atoms are tiny, short-lived, and not usable for any commercial purpose.

The total gold produced is only a few trillionths of a gram. Plus, any gold generated quickly turns back into lead after colliding with the walls of the collider. This means, for physicists, this process is more of a challenge than a financial gain.

Experts in the field emphasize that while this achievement shows the power of modern science, it also illustrates the limits of practical applications in nuclear physics. According to a recent study published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, transmutation has captured public fascination but remains largely theoretical outside of research labs.
