The Islamic Republic’s strategy of using “missile cities,” once a tactical advantage in potential conflicts, is now seen as a liability. During the ongoing tension with Israel and the US, these sites have become predictable, making them easier to target, as stated by The Wall Street Journal.
According to the report, both the US and Israel have shifted their approach. They are employing operations termed Operation Epic Fury and Operation Roaring Lion. Instead of relying on manned vehicles to track Iran’s missile facilities, they’re using drones that can closely observe these underground sites. When missile launchers are activated, manned jets are deployed to strike.
“The mobility that was once an advantage is now a disadvantage,” shared Sam Lair from the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies. With Iran’s air defenses nearly neutralized, the US and Israel are focusing their efforts more efficiently.
A key concern for both nations is determining how many missile launchers Iran still possesses. Decker Eveleth, a research analyst from CNA Corp., emphasized that the uncertainty surrounding Iran’s arsenal means it can maintain a strategic advantage.
Historically, Iran has faced challenges in launching its missiles. Initial reports indicated that Iran fired around 500 missiles in the early days of conflict. A CENTCOM report noted that airstrikes have reduced Iran’s missile launches by 86% within four days.
Another layer to this situation is Iran’s decision to decentralize its launch operations. This shift means not relying solely on top officials for responses, which raises the likelihood of miscalculations leading to larger conflicts. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) had already begun this process before the US-Israeli strikes.
As tensions escalate, the threat of miscalculation grows. There’s a danger that an inadvertent conflict could expand, particularly if Iranian actions impact neighboring countries like Turkey or Qatar.
