The number of satellites orbiting Earth has skyrocketed recently. Over the past decade, we’ve seen a surge in low-Earth orbit satellites, with more than 8,000 now in space. This increase, driven largely by SpaceX’s Starlink, has led to a serious issue: light pollution. For some areas, this is the first time they’ve experienced it, and it poses risks to wildlife and astronomy.

To tackle this challenge, scientists are exploring the use of a special material called Vantablack. This ultra-dark paint absorbs nearly all visible light—up to 99.965%. Its unique properties are similar to the feathers of birds of paradise, known for their light-absorbing qualities.

Vantablack was developed by Surrey NanoSystems in 2014. The latest version, Vantablack 310, absorbs about 98% of light. Researchers at the University of Surrey are testing how well it performs in space conditions. They plan to use Vantablack 310 on a CubeSat called Jovian 1, set to launch next year. The aim is to see if the paint can effectively reduce satellite brightness, making the night sky darker.

Astrophysics expert Astha Chaturvedi from the University of Surrey emphasizes the urgency of the situation. She notes that mega-constellations could increase sky brightness by as much as 1% in heavily affected areas. If Vantablack proves effective, it could be a game changer for protecting astronomy and preserving dark skies.

With the number of satellites expected to quadruple by 2030, finding solutions to mitigate light pollution is critical. The International Astronomical Union has even called for measures to protect the night sky, highlighting the importance of this ongoing research. As we navigate our satellite-filled future, innovations like Vantablack may hold the key to ensuring that both our skies and our stars remain visible.
