Austin Siebert, a 30-year-old from Maumee, was recently convicted for using “Hillbilly Elegy,” along with a GRE Handbook, to sneak narcotics into Grafton Correctional Institution. Court documents reveal he sprayed pages of these books with drugs before mailing them as if they were Amazon orders.

On November 18, U.S. District Judge Donald C. Nugent sentenced Siebert to over ten years in prison. Conversations recorded between him and an inmate showed their plan. Ironically, “Hillbilly Elegy” deals with the harsh realities of drug addiction, something Vance experienced with his own family.

In a recorded exchange, the inmate asked Siebert about the book. Initially confused, Siebert recalled it and referred to it dismissively as just a “romance novel.”

Recent studies indicate that drug-related problems remain prevalent in many communities, particularly in Appalachia, where Vance grew up.
