Meet Hawthornden Wainui, the world’s oldest alpaca living in captivity at 27 years old. This gentle creature resides in New Zealand and leads a very relaxed life. His owners, Vicki and Alex Cordier, believe Wainui’s calm routine is what keeps him so healthy and happy.
Wainui recently earned his title from Guinness World Records. On July 6, he was officially recognized as the oldest living alpaca, a remarkable feat since most alpacas live about 15 to 20 years. Vicki shared, “Wainui is very much an old man.”
Born on January 2, 1998, Wainui came to New Zealand as a young alpaca, following his mother from the farm. His name comes from Wainui Bay, where he initially lived. Vicki first discovered him at an auction back in 2002, and ever since, he’s had a loving home.
Wainui’s life is simple. He enjoys a hearty breakfast, a leisurely stroll around the paddock, and plenty of naps. If dinner is late, he’s always waiting, ready for more food. “He’s a bit of a grumpy old man now,” Vicki said, reminiscing about his younger days when he was the lookout for the herd.
As he ages, Wainui’s adventures are more subdued. He explores two small paddocks, often relying on memory to navigate his surroundings. His eyesight isn’t what it used to be, but he enjoys the company of his friends: Barney the goat and Squeak the sheep. Vicki describes him as calm and easygoing, fitting right in with the rest of the herd.
Wainui even has a flair for fashion, sporting a winter coat to stay warm. Vicki notes that Wainui’s secret to a long life includes the luxury of comfort. He has access to shelter and prefers to stay dry during rain showers.
Having an animal recognized in a Guinness World Record is special for his family. Vicki proudly states, “He’s one very special alpaca.” The joy he brings continues to be a source of inspiration, reminding all of us to embrace a little comfort and relaxation in our own lives.
