Unlocking the Truth About Yellow 6: Expert Insights on What You Need to Know

On January 15, the FDA banned Red 3, a common food dye, sparking interest in what other additives might be in our food. One dye that raises eyebrows is Yellow 6.

So, what is Yellow 6? According to the Environmental Working Group, Yellow 6 is a synthetic dye derived from petroleum. You’ll find it in many foods like desserts, snacks, cheeses, and sauces. It’s there to make food look more appealing, but it doesn’t provide any nutrition.

But is it safe? While Yellow 6 isn’t toxic right away, studies link it to various health concerns, such as cancer and behavioral issues in children. Benzidine, one of its components, is recognized as a carcinogen. In fact, the FDA noted in a 1985 report that consuming “free benzidine” posed a cancer risk that was just below their concern threshold.

Brian Ronholm, from Consumer Reports, mentioned that research ties synthetic food dyes to attentiveness and learning challenges in kids. A 2021 study found that some dyes can make children more prone to behavioral difficulties.

Why hasn’t the FDA banned Yellow 6 like Red 3? The FDA must approve color additives based on their safety and health effects. Yellow 6 passed these tests decades ago, and newer evidence hasn’t swayed the agency yet. Ronholm pointed out that the FDA often hasn’t reviewed food additives in decades.

In the EU, companies must label products containing Yellow 6 due to concerns about its effects on children’s behavior, leading many to reformulate their products. Thomas Galligan, a science expert, criticized the U.S. food industry for continuing to use such additives.

What can consumers do? Advocacy helped ban Red 3, and similar efforts may be needed for Yellow 6. In the meantime, check ingredient labels. If you see Yellow 6, decide what’s best for you and your family. Growing your own food is another option to control what you eat while being eco-friendly and saving money.
