Leonid Zotov, from Moscow State University, echoed these sentiments, suggesting the cause of faster spinning may lie deeper within the Earth itself, rather than from traditional models involving oceans or the atmosphere.

Unexpected factors can also change Earth’s rotation. For instance, the massive 2011 earthquake in Japan shifted the planet’s axis slightly and made days shorter by about 1.8 microseconds. Similar events have shifted Earth’s mass, affecting its rotation akin to how a skater spins faster by drawing in their arms.

As the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS) continues to monitor, we’re left to wonder what these changes may mean.
