Former Union Tourism Secretary Dr. Lalit Panwar recently discussed the crucial link between tourism and skill development at the launch of the coffee table book “Jewels of India – Bharat Ki Shaan, Bharat Ka Abhiman.” His key message? Combining tourism with skill training can spark economic growth in India.
Dr. Panwar emphasized tourism’s unique power to create jobs in areas where few opportunities exist, saying, “Tourism is the only sector that creates jobs where no other jobs are possible.” With over half of India’s population under 35, the focus should shift from merely creating opportunities to aligning education with industry needs.
He offered an interesting perspective on technology, highlighting that while artificial intelligence is essential, it should be guided by human intelligence. “Technology should empower our youth, not replace their relevance,” he pointed out.
According to recent statistics from the World Travel and Tourism Council, tourism contributed around 7% to India’s GDP and created nearly 40 million jobs. This highlights the sector’s importance in shaping economic futures.
The event pulled together a mix of policymakers, industry leaders, and community members, celebrating entrepreneurial success and cultural heritage. Dr. Panwar’s insights serve as a call to action for integrating education with tourism to prepare young people for the workforce.
Maneesh Media, the book’s publisher, has been chronicling the stories of Indian families globally since 1999. With offices in Jaipur, New York, and Toronto, they continue to preserve narratives that build cultural pride and history.
