As a young man, I faced tough conditions working in non-union steel mills. Long hours and minimal breaks made our days grueling. It was frightening to see co-workers get injured, which planted a deep dislike for authority within me. That animosity lingered even after I transitioned into teaching and coaching.
However, encouragement from friends pushed me to pursue advanced studies at Indiana University. There, I met inspiring figures who emphasized the need for balance between knowledge and wisdom. They introduced me to important theories in management, which changed my perspective on leadership.
Eventually, I became a school superintendent in a district known for tension with its teachers’ union. My initial attempts to bridge that gap were tough. But everything shifted during a conversation with the union president, who mentioned a teacher’s dream trip to Alaska. I proposed that the teacher could use my personal days, even though they decided against it. Instead, the union modified their contract to allow such exchanges among teachers.
That small act of goodwill led to a breakthrough. Soon, I was invited to a bar by a former union leader, which opened up new dialogues. We organized sessions that allowed teachers and administrators to craft language for contracts that respected teachers’ needs.
For example, we changed outdated bereavement policies. Now, teachers could define who their loved ones were and take the time they felt necessary to grieve. It was a simple change but one that meant a lot.
Years later, a new union leader told me that teachers were ready to strike if anyone touched the contract language we had created together. This showed the lasting impact of listening and adapting to the needs of educators.
To those in charge at universities, remember the value of experience. The wisdom of seasoned faculty can help build stronger, more supportive environments. It’s a lesson I learned the hard way, but one that has shaped my leadership style ever since.
