Billy Brimblecom Jr. has always had a passion for drumming. He can still recall the moment that passion ignited—a lively drum solo of “Wipe Out” blasting from his dad’s car radio. That’s when he decided he wanted to play the drums for real.
But life took a serious turn two decades ago when doctors found a mass in his ankle. The prognosis? A sarcoma. In his words, “The only reason you would lose your leg would be to save your life.” Sadly, that became a reality when he had to undergo an amputation.
The news was devastating, but Billy had a robust support system. One of his closest friends, Jason Sudeikis, known from “Ted Lasso,” stepped up. Sudeikis had met Billy during an improv workshop in Kansas City, and when he learned that insurance would barely cover Billy’s $60,000 prosthetic leg, he rallied the community for help.
They held a barbecue that raised enough funds for Billy’s new leg. What began as a fundraiser has turned into an annual jam session called Thundergong! This event has grown significantly, and now it provides prosthetics for countless amputees who struggle with insurance issues.
Sudeikis, along with fellow actors, have been instrumental in keeping the event alive. They’re committed to supporting their friend and those in similar situations. “It’s about hope, confidence, surviving, and thriving,” Brimblecom reflects.
The Bigger Picture
Did you know that, on average, about 500 people lose a limb every day in the U.S.? The cost for a prosthesis can range from a few thousand dollars to over $100,000. This cost barrier can lead to a troubling reality where many, like Josh Conner, a contractor who lost his leg in an accident, find themselves unable to work due to inadequate prosthetic options.
Thanks to Brimblecom’s nonprofit, Steps of Faith, thousands of people have received the help they desperately need. Brimblecom was inspired to take on a leadership role in the organization after he saw the joy and hope in the eyes of another amputee he met. “I wish that could be my job,” he thought. Now, it is.
As of today, Thundergong! has raised over $1 million to assist amputees nationwide. Billy’s personal journey highlights how strong friendships can empower individuals and communities to help those in need. Sudeikis captures this spirit perfectly: “To do something you love with people you love, to help those you may never meet, is something I wish for everyone.”
