Discovering Janie’s Amman: A Taste of Jordan

“In Jordan, the food is amazing everywhere,” shares Anas Aqel, co-owner and chef of Janie’s Amman. One bite of his falafel proves him right.

Located near the Ringling School of Art, Janie’s offers Middle Eastern-Mediterranean delights. Aqel calls their menu true to Jordanian roots, featuring mezze and street food.

Start with mezze: smoky baba ganoush made from fire-roasted eggplant, paired with smooth hummus topped with sumac. The star? His unique red falafel, crispy outside and fluffy inside. When asked how he gets it that color, he simply smiles, saying, “It’s all about the mix.”

Aqel’s journey to opening Janie’s began in 2022 when he met his now-partner Abood Hasan at a restaurant. Both being Jordanian, they shared a vision and opened Janie’s in January 2025, catering to students, office workers, and a loyal Middle Eastern crowd.

The chicken shawarma is another must-try. It’s made with layers of meat, shaved fresh and served over savory rice. The rice, bright yellow from spices like saffron and turmeric, is as delicious as it is colorful. “I use many spices in my rice,” he says proudly.

In addition to classic dishes, recent menu highlights include fried catfish, Turkish coffee, and flaky pistachio cake. And if you’re a burger lover, don’t miss the beef and lamb blend, served with spiced fries.

With a second location in the works, it’s clear that Aqel’s food is not just tasty—it’s creating a community. “Everything we make is delicious,” he says, and you’ll find it hard to disagree after your first bite.

Visit Janie’s Amman, Wed-Mon 11am-10pm, Tue noon-6 pm, at 1400 Dr Martin Luther King Way, Sarasota. For more information, head to janiesammanfl.com.
