The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Aviation Institute wrapped up another year of its Exploring Post program. This initiative provides hands-on experience for young people interested in aviation careers.
Over eight weeks, students dive into various roles within aviation, including piloting, air traffic control, airport management, and aircraft maintenance. For just $40, they gain unique access to aviation organizations, mentorship from professionals, and even flight simulation experiences.
The program kicked off on September 17, where students and their families learned about exciting career paths in aviation. From day one, the focus was on engagement and real-world insights.
Throughout the semester, students toured local aviation leaders, gaining valuable exposure. For instance, at Revv Aviation in Council Bluffs, they experienced a discovery flight, seeing the region from the sky and learning about aircraft handling. At Midwest Aviation at Eppley Airfield, they explored hangar facilities and learned about flight coordination.
A visit to Duncan Aviation in Lincoln showcased the intricacies of aircraft maintenance. Students saw how planes are maintained, painted, and remodeled, gaining an appreciation for the detailed work involved in business aviation.
Another highlight was a tour of Union Pacific Railroad, where students stepped aboard corporate aircraft, learning how a major transportation company integrates aviation into its operations. At Jet Linx Aviation, they witnessed how a private aviation company manages logistics and flight operations.
Back at the university, students practiced in flight simulators, getting a taste of what being a pilot is like. They also spoke with local air traffic controllers, gaining insights into their roles and the training required to ensure safety in the skies.
With a limited enrollment of just 25 students, the Exploring Post offers a personalized experience, blending hands-on learning with professional networking. This unique program helps students visualize their future in aviation clearly.
As the 2026 edition concludes, the UNO Aviation Institute stays true to its mission: inspiring future leaders in aviation through engaging and accessible programs.

Recent data shows a growing demand for skilled workers in aviation. According to a report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the aviation industry is expected to grow by 11% from 2022 to 2032. This means more opportunities for young people like those in the Exploring Post program.
The importance of initiatives like this can’t be overstated. They not only prepare students for the future but also empower them to join an industry that plays a key role in global connectivity and transport. With the right support and training, the next generation of aviators is ready to take flight.
