Unpacking ‘Ace’: A Comedic Misfire with Vijay Sethupathi and Rukmini Vasanth – Why Yogi Babu Deserves Better

Ace Movie Review: Coincidences can be entertaining, especially in crime comedies. However, relying too heavily on coincidences can feel lazy and unoriginal. This is the case with writer-director Arumuga Kumar’s film, Ace.

The story kicks off when Vijay Sethupathi’s character arrives in Malaysia. As soon as he steps off the plane, he bumps into Arivu (Yogi Babu) in an incredibly clichéd scene. Arivu knows way too much about another man, Bolt Kannan, and instantly believes Vijay is him. From there, the coincidences mount. Kannan, in need of a disguise and help, is whisked off to a Tamil neighborhood without a single question about his identity.

The real Bolt Kannan has been called in to work at a restaurant owned by Arivu’s love interest, Kalpana (Divya Pillai). Naturally, Vijay’s character lands a job there too, just by chance. As he settles in, he meets Rukmini Vasanth, who plays a young woman he quickly becomes infatuated with. Their encounters are so scripted they feel like the universe is pushing them together to fall in love. When Rukmini needs someone to handle some trouble, Kannan magically appears, shifting her feelings for him without any clear reason. They share a few laughs and a song, but it’s insufficient to explain her sudden change of heart.

Both Kalpana and Rukmini face financial challenges. Kalpana must pay off a significant debt, while Rukmini is desperate to escape her ruthless stepfather, played poorly by Babloo Prithiveeraj. Enter Kannan, a poker player who tries to gamble his way to solutions. Predictably, his plans backfire, leading him into deeper trouble. Eventually, he resorts to robbing a bank. This heist is as hastily written as everything else—rushed and tension-free. Surprisingly, he also wins a jackpot that nearly covers his stolen amount, raising eyebrows about the sheer number of coincidences in his life.

As the police begin investigating the robbery, real obstacles finally emerge. Yet, the writing remains uninspired, introducing half-baked thriller elements that squander any potential tension.

Despite its promising premise, Ace suffers from unimaginative storytelling, filled with overused clichés and flat jokes. The film’s structure is weak, and it ends up feeling disjointed and poorly executed.

This lack of depth extends to a subplot involving Raja Dorai. His repeated blackmail of a woman with a sex tape could have added tension, but instead, her character is sidelined, lacking any meaningful resolution.

Let’s also highlight the casual reliance on outdated humor regarding Yogi Babu’s character. His portrayal as a sanitation worker reinforces negative stereotypes, trivializing the struggles of an entire community.

Similar controversies arise around the film’s casting choices. Pairing 28-year-old Rukmini with 47-year-old Vijay raises eyebrows, especially amid ongoing conversations in the industry about age gaps in romantic leads. While their chemistry is genuine, one wonders if it reflects deeper, outdated norms in casting practices.

On the bright side, there’s undeniable chemistry among the cast. Vijay Sethupathi and Yogi Babu bring charm, making the viewer wish for a stronger film to match their talents. Although the performances aren’t groundbreaking, they still shine amid weak material. The film’s music and cinematography are also decent, preventing it from being a complete miss.
