When BBC Verify reached out to the White House for evidence supporting their claims about Democrats’ healthcare plans, they pointed to a post about their intent to repeal parts of Trump’s legislation limiting healthcare access for non-citizens. A significant aspect includes restricting Medicaid eligibility for various immigrant groups.

The upcoming change will mean that only certain categories of immigrants will qualify for Medicaid coverage. It’s projected that this could leave around 1.4 million lawfully present immigrants uninsured, according to KFF analysis.

Currently, undocumented immigrants are not eligible for federally funded healthcare programs like Medicaid or Medicare. However, emergency Medicaid coverage is available under certain conditions. This federal program allows hospitals to recoup costs for emergency services provided to low-income individuals regardless of their immigration status.

Interestingly, state-funded healthcare options do exist for undocumented immigrants in some states. As of April 2025, 14 states, along with Washington DC, offer state-funded healthcare for children, regardless of their immigration status.
