Unpacking the Buzz: Could D.K. Metcalf Really Be Traded to the Packers?

On Tuesday, Seahawks G.M. John Schneider addressed rumors about receiver D.K. Metcalf being traded. He brushed off the speculation, saying it’s common for big-name players to spark talk among agents. “Unless you guys know something I don’t,” he added.

However, reports about Metcalf’s future began to circulate just days later. Some suggested he might be heading to the Packers, while others pushed back against that idea.

Corbin K. Smith from Emerald City Spectrum first mentioned the Packers on Friday. He wrote that the team might be in discussions with the Seahawks and could have an offer involving a high draft pick and a young receiver to get Metcalf.

Adding to that, Pete Bukowski from The Leap confirmed Smith’s report. He stated that the Packers are actively working on a deal, hoping to trade standout cornerback Jaire Alexander to balance out any lost draft picks.

On the flip side, Matt Schneidman from The Athletic disputed these claims. He tweeted that there has been “no contact or negotiations” between the Packers and Seahawks regarding Metcalf.

Metcalf is entering the last year of a hefty contract, valued at $72 million over three years. Next year, he’s scheduled to make $18 million, with a cap hit of nearly $32 million. A trade would free up over $10 million in cap space.

Previously, running back Josh Jacobs pointed out the Packers’ need for a star receiver. With the 23rd pick in the draft, they might offer players like Christian Watson or Romeo Doubs in a package for Metcalf.

In the last season, Metcalf recorded 66 catches for 992 yards and five touchdowns. Notably, he had just 108 targets—the lowest since his rookie year. With Jaxson Smith-Njigba emerging as a key player in Seattle, it’s possible the Seahawks could consider trading Metcalf for a new start elsewhere in a more prominent role.
