Warning: Spoilers ahead for Daredevil: Born Again Episodes 1 and 2.
The new Daredevil: Born Again series kicks off with a shocking moment. In the first episode, “Heaven’s Half Hour,” we watch Benjamin Poindexter, played by Wilson Bethel, become Bullseye. In a devastating twist, he murders Foggy Nelson, portrayed by Elden Henson. Foggy is the longtime friend and ally of Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, played by Charlie Cox. For months, fans speculated whether Foggy or Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) would meet their end. Sadly, it was Foggy who met his demise, making it a painful moment for viewers. Let’s delve into why Foggy’s death feels so misplaced.
Foggy has been a central character in the Daredevil comics since the 1960s, created by Stan Lee and Bill Everett. He has been Matt’s steady companion and business partner through countless storylines. While adaptations often differ from the source material, killing Foggy feels particularly jarring. In the comics, he faced many challenges but was never killed by Bullseye. Instead, Karen Page is the one who has met that fate in the comics. It’s frustrating to see a beloved character, who has withstood the test of time, thrown away in just a few minutes of the show’s premiere.
The writers could have built Foggy’s story better. His death could have been impactful with more development. When Foggy dies, it resets the status quo, pushing Matt to abandon his vigilante life early in the series after believing he is not fit for the role. There’s so much left to explore with Foggy’s character, and losing him this way feels like a waste of valuable storytelling.
Questions arise: What has happened with Foggy, Karen, and Matt before this? Was their law firm thriving, or were they struggling? The show skips over these details, leaving viewers in the dark about the trio’s lives during the Blip. This lack of context makes Foggy’s sudden death feel even more rushed and unearned. Additionally, the one-year time jump after Foggy’s death deprives fans of seeing Matt in his Daredevil suit, which is disappointing since viewers were eager to see the character back in action.
Fans loved Foggy, and his abrupt exit is frustrating. The incredible acting and direction in the first two episodes shine, but Foggy’s untimely demise overshadows it all. Viewers are left with high hopes that future episodes, or even a second season, might bring Foggy back in some way. Whether through flashbacks or dreams, we hope he returns in a manner that does justice to his character.
In the comics, Foggy was once thought to be dead after being stabbed, but it turned out he faked his death to enter witness protection—a plot twist that seems unlikely in this series. With Foggy’s heart-stopping moment, it would be far-fetched to think he managed to pull off such a deception here. Still, if the writers find a way to bring him back meaningfully, it could lead to poignant storytelling in the future.
For now, fans can catch the first two episodes of Daredevil: Born Again streaming on Disney+. New episodes arrive every Tuesday. Hopefully, as the story unfolds, it provides the depth and character development that Foggy Nelson truly deserves.
