Interestingly, the last five coordinators had NFL coaching experience. However, Jerry Jones suggests they may consider candidates without that background. “It’s possible to have a first-timer,” he said, opening the door to a wider range of talent.
This change signals a shift in how the Cowboys approach hiring. Jones indicated a desire for a fresh perspective, saying, “If whatever we’ve been doing in the past isn’t working, we need to change it.”
Schottenheimer echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of flexibility. “The best coaches adapt to their players’ strengths,” he mentioned. This adaptable approach is crucial as the Cowboys believe they have key defensive players who can contribute significantly.
Among these players are Quinnen Williams, Kenny Clark, and Osa Odighizuwa. Stephen Jones pointed out the need for a clear vision on how these talents will fit into the team’s overall strategy. “We want to see how the new coordinator plans to utilize these players effectively,” he said.
The team is also considering their approach to the upcoming draft. While defense is a priority, they must evaluate all options, including star offensive players like CeeDee Lamb.
Schottenheimer summed up the complexity of the role: “We’re salesmen. We need to convince our players of our vision and why it will work.”
