Research from the Wildlife Institute of India shows that deforestation and mining from 1975 to 2019 have significantly reduced forest cover in the Aravallis. This loss leads to “gaps” that allow more sand and dust to reach urban areas. For instance, the number of dust storms in Delhi increased in parallel with declines in forest cover, making people more vulnerable to air pollution.
The forests of the Aravalli ranges also help filter air pollution by trapping dust and other harmful particles. Trees absorb PM2.5 and PM10 pollutants, improving air quality and generating oxygen.
Dr. Sharda Yadav, a local doctor, emphasizes the health risks posed by pollution. “I see more patients suffering from health issues related to pollution,” she says. “How can we destroy the Aravallis, which have supported the health of this region for centuries?”
Climate activist Sangeeta Nayyar raises important questions about development. “What’s the real cost of this progress? If it harms people’s health and well-being, is it worth it?”
