Unpacking the Snub: Why Are Emmy Voters Overlooking Taylor Sheridan’s 6 Award-Worthy Dramas?

It wasn’t a lack of effort. Big-name actors from Taylor Sheridan’s shows attended press events hoping for Emmy nominations. Yet, when the nominations were announced, none of his eligible shows—like Landman, Yellowstone, Mayor of Kingstown, and others—made the cut in major categories.

Tulsa King and Lioness managed to snag a few nominations for stunts, and 1923 was recognized for production design and costumes. However, popular entries like Landman and Yellowstone were completely overlooked.

This snub is surprising, given Sheridan’s talent for drawing in A-list stars like Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford. Despite their efforts, Ford missed out on a nomination for 1923, even while he received one for his role in Shrinking. Billy Bob Thornton, who stars in Landman, was also shut out despite being nominated for a Golden Globe.

So, what’s the reason behind these snubs? There are a few theories.

One idea is that Sheridan’s work resonates more with audiences in the American heartland, while many Emmy-nominated shows appeal to viewers on the coasts. Critics sometimes categorize his shows as “Red State,” simplifying their complex narratives. Although Sheridan’s characters often tackle environmental issues, he also writes provocative moments that can lean conservative.

Interestingly, Landman scored higher ratings than several nominated dramas. Critics concede that while Sheridan’s writing can be direct, the performances in his series are often compelling and deserving of attention.

Another thought is that Paramount+, still relatively new in the streaming landscape, struggles to compete with established networks. Showcasing 1923 on HBO might have resulted in a different reception. Just look at how shows on Hulu and Prime Video swiftly gained award recognition after their respective launches.

Lastly, it’s possible that some industry insiders simply don’t like Sheridan. He’s known for being independent and has distanced himself from Hollywood. He doesn’t engage in the usual Emmy politicking, which could impact how his work is perceived in award discussions.

While we can only speculate, it’s likely that if a different showrunner were at the helm, Landman might have seen more recognition. The awards landscape can be unpredictable, influenced by a mix of artistry, popularity, and industry dynamics.

As we keep watching, it’ll be interesting to see how Sheridan’s growing body of work continues to navigate these challenges in the future.
