The Rams finished that game with an impressive 249 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns, showcasing their efficiency with 0.34 expected points added per pass and 0.13 per rush from 13 personnel.
Other coaches are noticing the advantages of this approach. Dan Campbell, the head coach of the Detroit Lions, commented on how 13 personnel often reveals a defense’s strategy. He said that defenses usually show their hand, making it easier for offenses to predict their moves. The Rams’ versatile tight ends add another layer of complexity, keeping defenses on their toes.
While many teams shy away from heavy 13 personnel formations, the Lions embrace them due to their strong defensive setup. They have one of the lowest rates of subpackage formations, often opting for three linebackers. Linebacker Jack Campbell emphasized that this familiarity allows them to face 13 personnel without feeling out of place.
However, McVay knows the Lions’ defense well and might adjust his strategies accordingly. Historically, his offenses are known for utilizing 11 personnel (three wide receivers), which they still do at a significant rate of 66.8%. Despite their current success with 13 personnel, the Rams struggle with rushing efficiency out of 11 personnel.
In upcoming matchups, the Lions’ ability to contain the Rams’ rushing attack could be crucial. If they can limit the effectiveness of 13 personnel, they may have a good chance of scoring an upset.
