A food bank in Derby is seeing a dramatic rise in demand for assistance. The Derby Food 4 Thought Alliance (DF4TA) has reported that families are facing serious challenges due to poverty and the ongoing cost of living crisis, especially during the school holidays.
Manager Paul Brookhouse shared that the organization urgently needs £15,000. They are running low on supplies and have already received about £5,300 in donations from the community following their appeal. Despite this generosity, Brookhouse worries about the food bank’s future. They spend up to £10,000 each month to restock, and he noted that rising food and energy prices have made it hard for families to get by.
“Food inflation has surged over the past six months,” Brookhouse stated. “That means the price of food is climbing. Donations also seem less impactful than a year ago.” He emphasized the relentless pressure of rising costs, saying, “There’s no light at the end of the tunnel yet.”
The situation is a stark reminder of the struggles many face today, echoing sentiments from reports by organizations like the Trussell Trust, which show a significant increase in food bank usage across the UK. In recent years, they noted that a staggering 1.3 million three-day food parcels were distributed in 2021-2022, up from 1.2 million the previous year.
Brookhouse expressed gratitude for the community’s support: “A part of me feels embarrassed asking for help, but I’m always amazed by the generosity here. It shows that we can make a difference.” He emphasized their commitment to help everyone who reaches out for support.
