Unprecedented GBS Outbreak in Pune: Potentially One of the Largest in the World | Latest Insights from India

Mumbai is currently facing a serious challenge with Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS). Out of 140 patients, 18 are on ventilators in Pune. While this situation is concerning, it is not the largest GBS outbreak in history. The worst recorded outbreak occurred in Peru in 2019, where 1,120 cases were reported in just two months.

Before 2019, medical literature considered an outbreak to be between 30 and 50 cases. Interestingly, Peru’s cases have risen dramatically over the years—from 59 cases in 2017 to a steep rise to 1,120 in 2019. Just this year, they saw another spike with 130 suspected cases from mid-June to mid-July.
