According to the National Weather Service meteorologist Bryan Lewis, “We’re breaking so many records. It’s definitely one of the warmest Marches we’ve ever had.” He noted that these heat levels feel more typical of summer than spring. An extreme heat warning remains in effect for many inland regions, with advisories along the coast, as officials remind everyone to stay alert for signs of heat exhaustion.

Power outages added to the struggle for many who needed to stay cool. Hundreds of Southern California Edison customers were left without power for an entire day, starting at 6 a.m.

Forecasts show some relief is on the way this weekend, with temps dropping 5 to 10 degrees. By Saturday, conditions should ease, but the heat will return briefly next week, with highs in the 80s and 90s near downtown.

This unexpected heat wave follows a notably wet winter. The rain has brought new grass growth, but the high temperatures could dry it out quickly, raising concerns about early-season fires. National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Wofford explains that while there are no immediate threats, conditions could worsen if more rain doesn’t come next month.

Additionally, snowmelt in the mountains may affect reservoir levels this summer. If less water reaches them due to early melting, it could strain supplies when they are needed most.
